The Teaching of Sufism

World Sufi Day draws its inspiration from the spiritual teachings of Sufism — known in the Islamic tradition as Tasawwuf — the inward path of purifying the heart and seeking direct, living knowledge of the Divine.

A path of self-knowledge

The teaching of Tasawwuf holds that the door to knowing God passes through knowing oneself. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "He who knows himself knows his Lord." The path centers on self-purification (Tazkia-e-Nafs), contemplative meditation (Muraqaba), and the awakening of the heart — guiding seekers from the surface of religion toward its living essence.

Why we are restless

The teaching of Tasawwuf offers a clear diagnosis for the unease that so many carry today: we are not happy, not content, not at peace, because we have grown distant from the Divine Source — our Creator. Having forgotten the very purpose for which we were made, the heart wanders and grows weary, seeking rest in things that cannot give it.

Allah SWT created us for a single, luminous purpose: to know Him, to remember Him, and to walk in conscious relationship with Him. As the Qur'an reminds us, "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me" (51:56) — a worship that is not mere ritual, but a living remembrance (dhikr) that reawakens the heart. When this remembrance is lost, the soul feels its absence as restlessness; when it returns, the heart finds its home.

Core teachings

Tasawwuf

The inward path of Sufism — the purification of the heart and the journey toward direct knowledge of the Divine.

Ilm-e-Nafs

Knowledge of the self. To know one's ego (nafs) is the first step on the path; the seeker observes its layers and refines them.

Tazkia-e-Nafs

Purification of the self — the disciplined work of cleansing the heart of greed, pride, and heedlessness so that it may mirror the Divine attributes.

Muraqaba

Contemplative meditation — sitting in stillness and presence, fixing the heart upon the Divine, the central practice of the inward path.

Ilm-e-Ladunni

Divinely bestowed knowledge — knowledge granted directly by Allah to the heart, beyond books and ordinary learning.

Roohani Ilaj

Spiritual healing — the practice of turning to the Divine for healing of body and soul through prayer, remembrance, and contemplation.

One human family

World Sufi Day is rooted in a simple, universal truth: that all humanity shares a single origin and a single return to the Divine. Before the particulars of any one tradition lies this kinship. The day is an invitation — to seekers of every background — to remember that origin together, and to turn, even for a moment, toward the Source from which we came.

An invitation to peace

World Sufi Day extends an open invitation to all of humanity — to peace. Not merely the absence of conflict, but the peace that enters when the heart remembers its Source and rests in the remembrance of the Divine. This is the peace that heals families, softens divisions, and turns strangers back into kin.

Wherever we are, whatever our path, we are being called back — back to the purpose for which we were created, back to the connection that alone can make us whole. To remember, even for a single sincere moment, is to begin the return. And in that return lies the betterment of our lives, our communities, and our world.
